Stephen Shauger graduated from Pequannock Township High School in Pompton Plains and went on to the College of Forestry at Syracuse University. There he received his Bachelor of Forestry, and Bachelor of Science degrees. It was there that his future course was first charted. As an incentive to get into the flight instruction program, Syracuse offered a flying club. As a result, Shauger had his private pilot license and 60 hours of flying time by his senior year. Today, he has accumulated over 5000 flying hours Summer Work During the summer months, Shauger worked in various parts of the United States and overseas. At one point, be worked as a smoke jumpe in Oregon. He made 12 jumps in the states of Oregon and Washington. At least 50 climbers have lost their lives on the mountain and another have been killed on the approach or descent.
