But both sides of North Main Street and parts of South Pleasant Street were rated as poor. What’s worse is that there are two majorm subterranean reconstruction projects needed in areas of the Village where the sidewalk surface has been rated good or better. "The first one is located on the northeast end of Main Street in front of several businesses. The existing sidewalk capital reserve fund of $214,000 has largely been ear— marked to fill in a large vault that lurks beneath the surface. Some estimates have said that project could cost approximately $500,000. But that’ s not all. The town will also be forced to spend significant money to repair a rapidly deteriorat- ing retaining wall that supports the North Pleasant Street sidewalk. The retaining wall is “bowing outward,” according to the 2015 study, and “will not support the sidewalk in place.” , It was not clear from the discussion earlier this month if an estimate has been obtained for that project, but it could be a “couple of million.” According to the TRORC inventory, replacement of that sidewalk sidewalk surface alone would cost in excess of $750,000.. “A thrivinglittle village has to be walkable,” selectboard chair Ted Unkles said. “This has been an unusually tough winter.” Unkles added that the Main Street vault and the North Pleasant Street retaining wall have to be priorities. Selectmen discussed a number of options including forming an ad hoc committee to develop a man— agement plan and applying for federal funding. In the end, they asked Page to develop a proposal and bring it back to the selectmen at an upcoming meeting. Email: editor@jonews. com.
