O She is rightly concerned about radiation. Every- one should be. There is little doubt that excessive doses can be harmful. But in order to make an intelligent decision about radiation, it is necessary to understand it. Radiation is everywhere. It comes from the sun, the earth, the water we drink, and the purest food we can possibly eat. It occurs naturally in our atmosphere. The basic unit of radiation is a "millirem". A typical chest X-Ray exposes one to about 30 millirems of radiation, while a coast-to-coast airplane flight exposes a person to 2 millirems. The average yearly dose a person receives varies greatly. Among the major factors are the altitude at which you live, what food you eat, the construction of your home or office building, and the amount of X-Rays you receive. A typical Vermonter has an exposure level of between 100 and 300 millirems per year. Doses of radiation in excess of 200,000 millirems have been shown to cause a 1% Here's how. If Maddine Westbrook chose to stand near Vermont Yankee day and night all year long her increased yearly radiation exposure would be less than if she spent the same amount of time in the marble and granite state capitol building in Montpelier. Our critics argue that even this is too much, and that we're only talking about a normal operating situation. Yet even at Three Mile Island, the average radiation exposure received by its closest neighbors was about 1% of natural background radiation in the area, much less than a person would receive on a single transcontinental flight. Radiation is something we should all fear and respect. But in the interest of fair discussion, we should first understand it. Only then can you and Madeline Westbrook make sound derisions about the future.
