How to store
Bride's usually focus on
wedding preparations but
caring for the wedding gown
after the rice is thrown
deserves attention too.
The most important factor
in preservation is the
cleaning. Use a cleaning
method which is appropriate
for the fiber content.
Remember that trims, in-
terfacing and linings of gowns
may have different cleaning
recommendations.
Be sure to rinse bleach and
starch out of the garment
completely to prevent
yellowing. Starch also attracts
insects.
After cleaning, use white
tissue paper to pad sleeves,
bodices, and skirt folds. This
relieves tension on the fabric
where creases might become
tears over time.
Use a cotton sheet to drape
or wrap over the gown. It will
cut out some light, act as a
dust cover and protect the
gown from the wood surfaces
of shelves if stored horizon-
tally. It also allows the fabric
to breathe, making it less
susceptible to the effects of
aging.
The next step is finding
suitable storage space. It may
be hung on a padded hanger
and supported from the inside
with twill tape loops from the
waistline seam to the hanger.
Or you may choose to store in
a cedar chest or box. Prop lids
.open to allow for air cir-
culation.
bridal gown
Avoid stoing in damp or
humid locations.
Reminisce about your
special day on your an-
niversary. The gown should be
removed annually from
storage. Replace tissue paper
and launder the sheet before
returning the gown to storage.
SIIORTSIPS
The first cheese made in
America was cottage cheese.
In fact, it was probably made
in the Mayfh)wer's galley
