Jackie Ruben, a 29-year-old
artist bought a house with an
artist friend, Margaret
Maker, in September, 1979.
Michaels and Ruben had been
renting part of a house while
Maker, who is divorced, and
her young son had been
apartment dwellers.
"Renting is very unstable,"
Michaels told "Realtor
News•"
"The owners of the home we
had been living in unex-
pectedly decided to sell so we
wanted to buy• But we knew
the only way we could afford
to do that was as part of a
group," he added.
Maker had indicated to
them an interest in buying a
home so the three of them
decided to buy a home
together• All three signed the
mortgage as tenants-in-
common and contributed
equally to the monthly
payments.
"We went into it somewhat
naively", Micbaels said. "We
didn't think in terms of
separate living at first and it
got off to a shaky start.

stairs and Jackie and I were
upstairs and we would come
down to use the kitchen. It
didn't take long to realize that

home so the three of them
decided to buy a home
together• All three signed the
mortgage as tenants-in-
common and contributed
equally to the monthly
payments.
"We went into it somewhat
naively", Micbaels said. "We
didn't think in terms of
separate living at first and it
got off to a shaky start.

stairs and Jackie and I were
upstairs and we would come
down to use the kitchen. It
didn't take long to realize that
