PEACEFUL VALLEY--Scene is Ottauquechee River Valley near Woodstock. Greenway project set in Ouauquechee Valley HANOVER--The Connecticut other natural areas. River Watershed Council is undertaking a "greenway" project on the Ottauquechee River The first phase of a potential three-year project is designed to identify lands along the length of the river which are of significant concern to the area. Lands included will be those used, or exhibiting potential use, for agriculture, forestry, recreation, - or wildlife habitat. The Council is also interested in scenic, floodplain, groundwater recharge, and public access areas. The data will be mapped, including ownership in- formation where possible. Lands of greatest concern for their natural features, and in danger of significant alteration, will be targeted for future protection efforts. The Council is working closely with the Two Rivers- Ottauquechee 'Regional Planning Commission, and the 0ttauquechee Land Trust. Secondary information will be obtained from individuals, private organizations, and public agencies, lnClung the Soil Conservation Service, Vermont Institute of Natural Science, State Fish and Game Department, State Forests, Parks, and Recreation Department, local naturalists, and others. Field surveys will be con- ducted to confirm data. In ....... addition, the Council hopes to incorporate local feelings into the process through contact with town planning com- missions, selectmen, and local residents. Because of their familiarity with all or part of the Ottauquechee River, local citizens are being sought for assistance during this phase of the project. Key conservation, agricultural, and forestry areas need to be identified, as well as locations and boun- daries of presently protected conservation lands Such as privately owned and gover- nmentally owned parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and Using this information, the Council can pinpoint portions of the river on which to con- centrate its efforts. Techniques utilized by the Council in the past include acquisition by purchase or gift, acquisition and corn veyance to appropriate local or state agencies or private groups, and accepf.ance of conservation restrictions. In this :vay, the project's results can be used to help plan the river's future by recognizing and maintaining the im- portant natural and cultural qualities of the Ottauquechee River Watershed. Any thoughts and feelings about the river are welcome, as well as any technical in- formation that can be provided.
