vendors settle over tax prep issues
MONTPELIER--Several tax software vendors have made payments to the
state of Vermont to remedy unusually high error rates in some tax returns
completed using their commercial tax preparation software.
The Vermont Department of Taxes announced'0n Sept. 1 that Liberty
Tax Service, Lamson Tech/1040NOW, CCH Small Firm Ser ice ,:intuit
and H&R Block were making payments.
Taxpayers whose 2015 returns were impacted by certain commercial
vendor software issues related to itemized deductions will not be required
to pay any additional tax. The department stopped processing any such
amendmentsafter June 29 and has refunded any payments received prior to
that date.
In April, it was determined that several tax preparation software
products did not automatically prompt or route users with itemized
deductions to submit the IN-155 form, which calculated new statutory
limitations for certain deductions. As a result, certain taxpayers underpaid
their 2015 taxes. The erroneous software products have all been changed
so that users are now automatically prompted or routed to the form.
Truck hits camper on 1-91
THETFORD--A tractor trailer-sideswiped a camping trailer parked on
the shoulder of I-91, leading to vehicle damages, but nobody was injured
in the incident. On Aug. 31 at 1:49 p.m., Trooper Charles Schulze
responded to the accident site in the southbound lane of I-91 in Thetford.
According to the press release, Oswaldo Martini, 62, of Branford,
Connecticut, was driving south in a 2015 International tractor trailer. A
2013 Chevrolet Silverado towing a fifth wheel camper was parked along
the west side shoulder of the road because a tire on the trailer had gone flat.
For some unknown reason, Martini' s truck drifted along into the road
shoulder, sideswiping the left side of the pickup truck and trailer parked
on the side of the road. After hitting the parked vehicles, the tractor-trailer
stopped a short distance ahead along an embankment. Martini, who had
been wearing a seatbelt, was not injured.
Luckily, the people who had been in the pickup truck were sitting away
from the vehicle when the collision occurred and they were not injured.
The tractor-trailer was moderately damaged along the right side and a
fuel tank ruptured. The camper was extensively damaged and considered
to be a total loss. The Silverado had moderate damage on the left side.
The travel lane was closed for a few hours while crews removed the
vehicles and cleaned debris from the road. A crew from Clean Harbor
Environmental Services subsequently arrived to assess the spill of diesel
fuel.
Martini received a civil violation complaint for driving on a part of the
road that was not meant to be a traffic lane. Members of the Thetford fire
and police departments, Upper Valley Ambulance, Agency of
Transportation, a Vermont Department of Motor Vehicle inspector and
Sabil and Sons wrecker service also responded.
Asian clam found in VT
MONTPELIER--State officials recently discovered the presence of an
invasive clam species in Lake Bomoseen. The Asian clam has been
documented in surrounding regions, but had not yet appeared in Vermont
until now.
Asian clams, like zebra mussels,
are filter feeding organisms that can
increase algae blooms and deplete
resources needed by native species.
They can also form dense .popula-
tions clogging intake pipes to
lakeside homes, industrial water
systems and irrigation canals.
Researchers say that because of
the size and number of adult clams in
the affected area, it is likely they have
been in the lake for more than a year.
No Asian clams were found at any of
the other public access areas or
beaches surveyed outside this area.
