where do we start counting.
Usually we start the count for
a winter on September 1 and
end on April 30.
Start September 1 and
continue the count for a full
year. Someone else might
start January 1 and run for a
year. This makes it a bit
difficult sometimes to com-
pare figures.
In general, I like the Sep-
tember to April arrangement
because this covers the
heating season. Using this
system, the 82 year average
for St. Johnsbury is 7,623.3
degree days. This is slightly
under the normally quoted
8,000 degree days. This is
mainly due to the fact that a
few degree days would be
picked up in May and June.
Using this system, the
coldest winter in the last 84
years was the winter of 1917-18
with 8.659 degree days bet-
ween September and April.
This was about 14 percent
colder than a normal year. If
we look at the number by
months, the average Sep-
tember has 178.8 dd; October,
560.5 dd; November, 935 dd;
December, 1,354 dd; January,
1,499,5 dd; February, 1,312;
March, 1,105 dd; and April,
678.9 dd. In the winter of 1917-
18 the numbers went: Sep-
tember, 259.5 dd; October, 622
dd; November, 1,060.5 dd;
December, 1,739.5; January,
1,779 dd; February, 1,440 dd;
March 1,141 dd; and April,
617.5. This gives an indication
of how bad things can get. In
this light, last winter was not
too bad.
An average September
produces 6 dd. per day;
October, 18, November, 30;
December, 44; January, 48;
February, 47; March, 36; and
April, 23. So our sample day at
the beginning of the article,
with 65 dd, this would have
been a colder day than is
normal for either January or
February.
This is a lot of numbers, but
hopefully, the numbers offer a
base-line for some com-
parisons•

R ALL SAVIORS?
BNB is pleased to offer the new 12.Month All-Savers Certificate. They will be available
effective October 1, and should be Ielpful in several respects.
. A 12.14 % RATE AND TAX SAVINGS -- BNB will currently pay this rate on All-Savers Certificates. This is based on 70%
of the prevailing 52-week U.S. Treasury bill rate. The first $2,000 of interest will be excluded from tax if you file a ioint Federal tax return. If you file as an individual, the tax
exclusion can be up to $1,000.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW -- a, Savers c,,t,s will benefit most savers, but not everyone. For instance, to earn the full exemption
you will have to invest a fairly large sum. Weql be glad to help compute that figure based on current rates. We will welcome investments of $500 or more, and the exclusion will
vary with the amount invested. Under law, there is also a penalty for any early withdrawal. There is the advantage of a guaranteed rate and FDIC insurance.
SHOULD YOU ACT NOW? -- These certificates will be available through December of 1982. This gives you ample time to calculate the best
amount to invest and the tax savings that can result. If you have any questions, drop by today, we want to help you.
. 12.14% rate is effective for the month of October.
